Kumari Selja Condoles the Death of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi

The Union Culture Minister Kumari Selja has condoled the death of legendary classical singer Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. In her condolence message here today, she said, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi was the leading exponent of the "khayal" form of singing and his renditions of devotional songs - bhajans and abhangs, mesmerised several generations of classical music lovers in India as well as abroad. She said that Pt. Joshi has enthralled a large number of audiences of all age and social strata through decades through live concerts, albums and films songs.

She said, for his dedication and devotion to Hindustani Classical Music and his role in its promotion, Pt. Joshi had been conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1976 and the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna in 2008.
